Literacy: Spanning the US
West Philly Woman Takes On Human
Trafficking With Outreach Center

A
West Philadelphia drop-in center for human trafficking victims is celebrating
its one year anniversary. The woman behind it all started the effort out of her
own pocket.
"I
want to be the voice for the voiceless, and that literally is what we
are," said Sakinah Love, founder of Redeemed For A Cause.

A
trained therapist, Love gained rapport with the women she met over time.
Redeemed For A Cause and their volunteers began expanding their efforts to
provide free snacks, STD testing, hepatitis A vaccinations and more, with
visits to the women two Saturdays of the month.
Her
outreach, many times, even included the pimps.
"Hurt
people hurt people," she said. "If we can heal the ones that are
hurting, then that hurt that they are giving to our women can cease."
Love
opened up the Redeemed For A Cause drop-in center at 5100 Spruce Street last
September, and they offer a safe place for women to take a nap, clean up and
get help if they want it.
"We
have an adult literacy class, a resume work shop, a Bible study, a trauma
group," said Love. LISTEN

Free Literacy Program At Library
Offers Help To Poor Readers Or Those Who Can’t
Lebanon
Local News: 9.17.2019 by Sarah Brown
A
new program geared toward native English speakers who need help learning to
read and write is expected to be available at the Lebanon Public Library by
November.
Linn-Benton Community College, Linn County Library Consortium
and GED Network are partnering together to offer
an adult literacy program funded by a grant through the State Library of Oregon.
Kendra
Antila, director at the Lebanon Public Library, can recall multiple instances
over the course of her 17 years at the library when she’s been approached by
adults who are looking for help with one of the most fundamental skills,
learning to read.
“Each
time I had to tell someone who was brave enough to ask for help that none was
available, it broke my heart,” Antila said.

Literacy Week Announced by Bradford/Wyoming
County Advocates
EndlessMtnLifestyles:
9.18.2019 by Rick Hiduk
Bradford-Wyoming County Literacy Program
(BWCLP) representatives made their annual visit to the Wyoming County
Commissioners on Tuesday for the proclamation of National Adult Literacy Week
and to share what the agency has been doing over the past year. BWCLP director
Audrey Carrington and ESL instructor Vicki Vannan brought the latest national
literary statistics to the commissioners, which warn of a potential labor
shortage in 2020 due to language deficiencies.
Figures
in the proclamation indicate that 36 million Americans lack basic reading and
writing skills, and even more lack basic math skills and the credentials to
succeed in post-secondary education. Those who lack basic reading and writing
skills are roughly twice as likely to be unemployed, three times more likely to
be in poverty, four times more likely to be unhealthy, and eight times more
likely to be incarcerated.

In
Bradford County, the BWCLP has been called upon to assist with an influx of
families from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and several Central American countries
taking part in Guthrie’s “Nurses Without Borders” program. In most cases, at
least one family member speaks some English, Carrington noted, but the BWCLP is
providing ESL classes for both adults and public school students in the Sayre
area. READ MORE >>
