Digital Inclusion Week 2020 Is Here!

Digital Inclusion Week, sponsored by the National Digital Inclusion Alliance, is an annual event meant to bring attention to solutions addressing home internet access, personal devices, and local technology training and support programs, with the goal of closing the digital divide that exist in cities and local communities around the country. This year, Digital Inclusion Week is from October 5 to 9.

COVID-19 has shown a white-hot spotlight on digital divide issues that our students and others are currently facing. During Digital Inclusion Week 2020, there are many ways to learn more about and raise awareness of digital equity issues that communities in California face:

Celebrate Adult Education and Family Literacy Week 2019

First proposed by the *National Center for Literacy (NCL) in the early 2010s, the National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week this year is September 22 to 28. This week is a great opportunity for adult education programs to promote the many ways they are working to raise adult literacy levels in their local communities and across the country.

NCL and ProLiteracy, two national organizations committed to combating adult illiteracy in the US, have compiled a number of resources to better understand literacy issues and their impact on individuals and families, and resources to advocate for more funding and services that tackle illiteracy and support adult learners.

AEFL Week resource links – There are a variety of resources here: fact sheets, advocacy materials, and other information from NCL and some of its partner organizations.

Census 2020 resource links – With the census coming up next year, topics include an overview of the 2020 Census, how people are counted, census jobs, resources for teaching and learning and for programs, and advocacy.

Social media activities and messaging – How to spread the word about AEFL Week on social media, including messaging developed in a number of topic areas (also available here on the ProLiteracy website: Sample AEFL Week Social Media Messages). ProLiteracy has included a logo and social media images and videos on its Adult Education and Family Literacy Week Toolkit

ProLiteracy has its Toolkit with sections on adult literacy facts, suggested activities, sample letters and media releases, and social media.

New USA Learns Course Launched! via OTAN News

New USA Learns Course Launched!

USA Learns has launched a new beginning high / intermediate low course: English 1 Plus. As the name suggests, this course builds on USA Learns' 1st English Course. It gives students the opportunity for more vocabulary, listening, and grammar practice before they move on to the 2nd English Course, addressing a long-time need for a bridge between the two levels. If your learners know how to navigate other USA Learns courses, English 1 Plus will be a snap.

English1 Plus was created in partnership with Voice of America Learning English. Each lesson is based on select clips from their Let's Learn English 1 videos. These amusing, easy-to-understand videos are accompanied by USA Learns-style interactive activities that help students explore the language in depth and practice their skills.

The course consists of five units with six lessons each. Each lesson includes practice activities for listening comprehension, grammar and writing, reading, and speaking.

Learners go to the USA Learns Homepage and click Start Now to register for the course. There's also a teacher side at the USA Learns Teacher Homepage. Teachers can easily create a teacher account to deliver free online instruction to their learners, monitor progress, and get user-friendly reports about time spent and scores.

The 1st English Course is a video-based online English course for beginner students. Learn English with the video stories of the beginner students in an adult education class. Online activities using video, photos, sound, charts and text teach vocabulary, grammar, spelling, and life skills, and give you practice in English listening, speaking, reading and writing. There are 20 units in this English course covering basic topics like time, clothes, weather, places in the neighborhood and more.

English 1 Plus is a beginning high / intermediate low course based on videos from the Voice of America Let's Learn English series. Learn English with fun videos about Anna, who works in Washington, D.C. Watch stories about her work, friends, and activities while you learn English vocabulary, listening, grammar, writing, reading, and spelling. This English course has 5 units, with six lessons each. We recommend that you complete this course after the 1st English Course.

The 2nd English Course is a video-based English course for Intermediate students. This English course includes five engaging video stories about the situations of different characters living in the U.S. There are 20 units covering topics like Workers and the Workplace, Housing and Family Life, Taxes, Law and Community Issues and more. Interactive practice activities combine video, sound, charts and pictures to teach vocabulary, grammar, and life skills in all language skills – listening, speaking, reading and writing.

The Practice English and Reading course contains Intermediate level readings on a variety of topics. The stories originally came from news reports. Besides reading the story yourself, you can also listen to a native speaker read the story. Each unit contains a reading, vocabulary and spelling practice, comprehension questions, and a writing activity. Pronunciation practice is also part of the vocabulary section. In this intermediate English course there are dozens of stories in 11 different topics.

The USA Learns Citizenship course helps immigrants prepare for all parts of the naturalization interview, including the steps to becoming a U.S. citizen; who needs legal help and where to get it; how to avoid immigration fraud; preparation for the oral review of the N-400 application, section by section; U.S. history and government for the Civics test, including practice with speaking, reading and writing; what to expect at the interview, including making small talk with the interviewer and following instructions; vocabulary and grammar for answering interview questions; and what to do after becoming a U.S. citizen.
