Duets of Difference: What Matters to Us
Patch NY: 2.18.2021 by Sophia Kim, Neighbor

A short film exploring the identities and stories of University Settlement community members studying English as a second language in the Adult Literacy Program accompanied by music and dance. The film is a culmination of a month-long teaching artist residency with four different Adult Literacy classes. "What Matters to Us" is a virtual reimagination and application of Creative Traffic Flow’s project, Duets of Difference.

In this time of heightened xenophobia and political intolerance, The Duets of Difference project explores how people from different communities with different life experiences can connect in their differences. Students in the Adult Literacy program represent many different ages, ethnicities, and experiences. There were at least 11 different languages spoken amongst the class. "What Matters to Us" explores differences in family, relationships, and how to communicate as an English Language Learner.

"Duets of Difference: What Matters to Us" is made possible by the generous support of the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. The Performance Project is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council. New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.  WATCH 01:28

Contra Costa County Public Library: My Experience With The PSC Program
Contra Costa County Public Library: 2.23.2021 by Jayoung L.

Like many adults who can speak English but want help with basic reading and writing, Jayoung asked for help at the library. Below is her story of working with a tutor.

I am a newcomer to California. Although I have been living here for 10 years, I am still struggling with English. Last winter, I went to library and got my library card. On that day, I met Kate and she led me to the PSC program. Fortunately, I was matched with Patricia, who is my tutor.

[Pat] taught me in a variety ways. One day, she gave me copies of the NY Times and USA Today to read and discuss. It was a little bit hard for me, but I loved the conversation with her about the current events of the USA and international issues. Also, I liked to talk about several issues between South and North Korea.

It was lucky that I joined the PSC program and met my tutor, Pat. The PSC program provides momentum to encourage me to study English and to get US citizenship. I am pleased to say that meeting Pat is helpful not only for studying English but also understanding life in the USA and building confidence and friendship.  READ MORE ➤➤
