Loudoun Literacy Council Launches Videos To Promote Reading At Home
Loudoun Times: 3.30.2020 by Karen Graham

When schools closed in Loudoun County due to the coronavirus pandemic, officials with the Loudoun Literacy Council began to think of creative ways to continue their outreach to the children and adults they work with regularly.

On March 26, they rolled out a fun new way to promote reading: videos by some of Loudoun's most recognizable faces reading children's books on social media.

The first video is from Loudoun County Public Schools Public Information Officer Wayde Byard, who reads “10 Little Ladybugs.”

They are hoping to do many more with elected officials, school principals, librarians, musicians, teachers, firefighters and anyone else who would like to contribute a video.

Hiring Hoosiers: Overcoming The Language Barrier To Secure Employment
Indy Channel: 3.31.2020 by Marc Mullins

Hiring Hoosiers is an initiative from RTV6 that works to connect Hoosiers to employment opportunities, career development resources, training programs and educational paths. Learn more about Hiring Hoosiers and see new stories weekdays at 6 a.m. on RTV6.

When Keydi Rodriguez moved to Indiana more than seven years ago, she knew only the most basic greeting.

"When I come here," she explains in a heavy Spanish accent, "the only word I can speak, I say, 'Hi, How are you?' That's it."

Rodriguez, who hails from Honduras, spoke very little English. She came to the U.S., and more specifically, Indiana, to help her mother. Rodriguez admits her inability to speak English turned out to be quite an obstacle.

"So it was a little bit hard at that time to find some job," she says. At the time, Rodriguez had no paycheck. No benefits. And little hope. There is help, however.

Several programs under the umbrella of the Indianapolis-based Morales Group on the city's northwest side are collaborating with several nonprofit agencies and employers to help people who were in Rodriguez's predicament.

Yecenia Tostado is the executive director of Project Azul, one of the programs associated with the Morales Group.

Indy Reads provides English-as-a-second language classes at Morales Group offices twice a week.

The "Immigrant Welcome Center" also provides access to English classes.  READ MORE ➤➤

S.M.A.R.T. Goals
Literally Speaking: March-April 2020

SMART goals can apply to any goals in life. They can be long or short term.

For Example: Saving Money
Let’s say that your goal is to start saving more money. This alone isn’t a SMART goal, but it can easily be modified so that it is one.

Let's make this goal SMART!
For example: You could say that you want to save $10,000 a year for the next ten years. Now, the goal is specific and measurable because you have an amount that you are shooting for and the ability to measure the amount you end up actually saving. This goal is time-bound as well, since your goal is to save a specific amount each year over a given period.

Whether the goal is achievable depends on your own financial situation. Assuming it is, the goal fits that criteria as well.

Lastly, you have to analyze whether saving money is a relevant and important goal for you personally. If that is true, then the goal in this example fits all the criteria of being a SMART goal.  READ MORE ➤➤
