Marinette
and Oconto Counties Literacy Council Founder Wins Volunteer Leadership Award
Green
Bay Press-Gazette: 5.10 .2019 by Kent
Tempus
When
an elderly patient told home health nurse Janet Glime he wanted to learn to
read before he died, she started looking for resources to help him.
She
was shocked to find there was no literacy organization serving either Oconto
County or Marinette County, and the man died before getting help.
“That’s
what got to me,” said Glime, who responded by taking tutoring classes in Green
Bay.
Soon
after, in March 2011, Glime, along with several local educators, an attorney
and medical experts, researched and formed the Marinette and Oconto Counties Literacy
Council.
Since
2012, the group has trained more than 55 adult tutors, who have taught more
than 60 adult learners.
For
her efforts, Glime — who tutors, trains tutors and serves as president of the
council — was presented with the Leadership Award at the 31st annual WPS
Volunteer Awards. READ

A
Resource Centers Way To Help Parents In The Permian Basin
Helping
parents help their kids
Your
Basin: 5.10.2019 by Erin Reynolds
The
Permian Basin Adult Literacy Center has been
helping adults learn to read for over 30 years.
Alba
Austin, PBALC Executive Director, says "if they don't know how to read or
write in English it prevents them from moving in their careers and improving
their lives."
One
program teaches adults to read English and another teaches the English
Language. The director of the Center says small class sizes allow these adults
to feel comfortable and learn faster. WATCH
