time and knowledge that the tutors make to the learners in the literacy

Literacy
needs changed in 35 years
Times Record News: 8.01.2017
As Wichita Adult Literacy
Council (WALC) approaches our 35th anniversary offering adult
literacy services in North Texas and as I approach my 23rd year as the director
of WALC, I have noticed how significantly the needs of our literacy services
have changed as we have all changed.
Over the past few years, we have
added health literacy to our focus by helping our adult clients who are
struggling with issues regarding their health. These issues have profound
effects on not just themselves but also their families and our community. I
preach to our clients, healthcare professionals, and to anyone who will listen,
how important it is to take ownership and learn about issues that affect their
well-being and the well-being of those they love.
I had to learn the hard way this
past spring and had to listen to what I had preached for years. Many of you,
perhaps, read my column in April which began with “Hi, I’m Sara, and I have
colon cancer.”
═════════►
I am fortunate to have the resources
and the ability to seek options and take ownership of my issues. MY PCP
referred me to my gastroenterologist for a colonoscopy, and the gastro sent me
to the surgeon who then referred me to the oncologist. I could afford to do
this. Many in our community are not as lucky as I am, but we can try to help
those folks through education and, hopefully, convince our legislators that
affordable healthcare should be mandatory for all US citizens. READ MORE @
ESL In-Home Program of Northern
Nevada
The English as a Second
Language In-Home Program of Northern Nevada, an Innovation
Grant recipient, was rewarded by the National Literacy Directory for its
creative efforts to meet students where they are.
Offering a Literacy
"Lifeline" to ESL Students
Ana. C. and her young son came to
the United States from Central America in 2011, settling in Carson City,
Nevada. Ana came with no knowledge of the English language, but felt an urgency
to learn the language of her new country. Her neighbors told her about the
English as a Second Language In-Home Program of Northern Nevada.
The ESL In-Home Program offers what
it calls a "lifeline" to adults who are unable to attend formal classroom
settings due to physical disabilities, limited or no transportation, lack of
funds for childcare, job constraints, or intimidation. Its program offerings
include ESL, Workplace Communication, English Conversation, Computer and
Financial Literacy, GED Preparation, and U.S. Citizenship Study.
After speaking with her neighbors,
Ana called the director of ESL In-Home Program and expressed her motivation to
learn the language of her new country and to help her children succeed. She was
assigned a patient and understanding tutor and began weekly tutoring sessions.
ESL In-Home Program's trained
community volunteers teach one-on-one or in small groups of 2-5, providing the
opportunity for students to progress comfortably at a fast pace through
personalized attention. Students and tutors generally meet at the tutor's or
student's home or at public sites at mutually convenient times for both. READ MORE @
