Adult Literacy Caucus Briefing
February 13, 2013
122 Cannon House Office Building
2:30 pm — 3:30 pm
Educating Immigrant Workers for a New Economy:
Immigrant Integration in the Adult Education and Family Literacy Act
Open to all Members of Congress in the House and Senate, Congressional staff, and advocates, the briefing provides an opportunity to learn how adult education plays a key role in integrating immigrants into the U.S.
English language proficiency helps immigrant workers become self-sufficient and a viable part of the American economy, contributing to our recovering economy. In many places throughout the country, adult education programs serve as the de-facto immigrant integration system. Services such as English language instruction and civics are provided to over a million adult workers each year through the Adult Education and Family Literacy Act.
This briefing will examine what Congress can do to ensure these programs serve as a vital education partner in immigration reform efforts and explore promising programs in immigrant integration.
