Federal funding for literacy eliminated:

Senate: 91 – 9
Signed by the President

$250 million Striving Readers program
$66 million Even Start family-literacy program
$25 million Reading Is Fundamental program
$26 million National Writing Project
$64 million Leveraging Educational Assistance Partnerships (LEAP) program


The overall package is intended to keep the government running for two more weeks while lawmakers and the White House continue to negotiate a budget plan.
